Trani, Joseph di
(1568-1639)
   Palestinian rabbi and scholar, son of Moses ben Joseph di Trani. He was born in Safed, and founded a yeshivah there. Later he settled in Jerusalem, where he did research on the design and plan of the Temple. He returned to Safed and became head of the Sephardi community. Eventually he moved to Constantinople, where he directed a yeshivah, and became chief rabbi of Turkey.
